Many of the designs appeared to have been inspired by the work of Holbein, Vandyke, Hollar amongst others. \r\n\r\nIt seems likely that these engravings were originally part of a longer, 4 volume collection of designs a copy of work is held in the New York Public Library and includes an account of the authorities from which the figures are taken, and some short historical remarks on the subject.
