Dorothea (or Dorothy or Dora) Jordan (1761-1816) was an extremely popular and versatile actress, known for her performance in 'breeches roles' where she could display her shapely legs, and for her 20-year liaison with Prince William, the Duke of Clarence, with whom she had at least ten illigitimate children. Her stage career lasted from 1777 until her retirement in 1815 when the critic William Hazlitt wrote admiringly of her: 'Mrs Jordan's excellences were all natural to her. It was not as an actress, but as herself, that she charmed everyone.'","physicalDescription":"Sketch of Mrs Jordan as Clara in Matrimony.
