The third leg is made of turned sycamore and together the legs make a contemporary version of a traditional tripod. The designer was Matthew Hilton, who produced many such zoomorphic designs in the late 1980s. He originally designed this table for a private client who had seen some of his cast aluminium candlesticks and wanted a piece of furniture with the same character. \r\n\r\nSCP Ltd, a London-based manufacturer of progressive furniture design, made this example. The lustrous dark-stained top is in fact made of MDF, a cheap and readily available material. However, combined with the sparkling metal legs and the polished stainless steel insert, the inexpensive top makes the table look very luxurious.","physicalDescription":"Circular table with a stained MDF top with a stainless steel disk inserted in the centre, and a tripod pedestal base constructed from a single angled sycamore leg piercing a cast aluminium form suggestive of the rear legs of an antelope.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Hilton, Matthew","id":"A2917"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"SCP Ltd","id":"A2919"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"x33306"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"MDF","id":"x34484"},{"text":"stainless steel","id":"AAT10920"},{"text":"sycamore","id":"AAT12357"},{"text":"aluminium","id":"AAT11015"}],"techniques":[{"text":"staining","id":"AAT53058"},{"text":"turning","id":"AAT53158"},{"text":"casting","id":"AAT53104"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Stained MDF, stainless steel insert, turned sycamore, cast aluminium","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2006AT6279","2006AT6280","2006AT6278","2006AT6277","2006AT6276"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES341085"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Table","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1987","earliest":"1987-01-01","latest":"1987-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased with the assistance of the manufacturer","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"710","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"840","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured from the object","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Tripod table, of cast aluminium, turned sycamore and stained MDF, designed by Matthew Hilton, 1987","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Collecting for the Future\r\n\r\nTable\r\nDesigned by Matthew Hilton (British)\r\nManufactured by SCP Ltd, London\r\nMDF Top, stainless steel insert, sycamore leg, aluminium legs\r\n1987\r\n\r\nThis table was collected to represent the renaissance of British furniture during the past decade, in particualr the work of a rising young designer, as well as one of the few British manufacturers devoted to developing and producing progressive furniture.\r\n\r\nThe original design of this table resulted from a provate commission by a client who had seen a recent Hilton candlestick design and wanted the same feeling in a piece of furniture.
