The creation of carefully staged, tableau-like photographs has been a significant vein in contemporary photography since the 1980s, and Crewdson is acknowledged as one of the most influential practitioners of the genre.\r\n\r\nIn his images, Crewdson reworks the American suburb into a stage-set for inexplicable, often disturbing, events that usually take place at twilight. Working on an epic scale, Crewdson has developed a process akin to the making of a feature film to create what he calls ‘frozen moments’, with the help of a large crew to shoot and then develop the images in post-production. \r\n\r\nEvery detail of these images is meticulously planned and staged, in particular the lighting. In some instances lighting and special effects such as artificial rain or dry ice are used to enhance a natural moment of twilight, whilst in others an effect of twilight is entirely artificially created. Crewdson’s images depict uncanny events that momentarily transport and transform actors from the homeliness and security of their suburban context, creating a sense of what the artist calls ‘psychological realism’. ‘Beneath the Roses’ is Crewdson’s most recent body of work, created from 2003-2007.","physicalDescription":"Colour photograph of a snowy suburban backyard with a figure in a doorway in the distance.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Crewdson, Gregory","id":"A30400"},"association":{"text":"photographer","id":"x43821"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"}],"techniques":[{"text":"photography","id":"AAT54225"},{"text":"printing","id":"AAT53319"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Digital pigment print","categories":[{"text":"Photographs","id":"THES48910"},{"text":"Making It Up: Photographic Fictions","id":"THES281337"},{"text":"Uncanny","id":"THES379132"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2013GH9513"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"A","id":"THES304216"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"photograph","id":"AAT46300"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"USA","id":"x29333"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2006","earliest":"2006-01-01","latest":"2006-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased with the support of the American Friends of the V&A, through the generosity of Mr and Mrs Hugues Lepic","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"144.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"31/10/12","earliest":"2012-10-31","latest":"2012-10-31"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"223.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"31/10/2012","earliest":"2012-10-31","latest":"2012-10-31"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"5.5","unit":"","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"31/10/2012","earliest":"2012-10-31","latest":"2012-10-31"},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Frame measured by JC.","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Label on back of frame signed and with the following annotations:\r\n'Gregory Crewdson / 'Beneath the Roses' / Untitled / Winter 2006 / Archival Pigment Print / Edition 4 of 6 / 57 x 88 inches (144.78 x 223.52 cm)'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Photograph, digital pigment print, 'Untitled', from the series 'Beneath the Roses', Gregory Crewdson, USA, 2006.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Published in V&A Publications/Thames and Hudson 'Making It Up: Photographic Fictions' 2018, by Marta Weiss"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Label for 'Making It Up: Photographic Fictions' (3 May 2013 - 12 January 2014):\r\n\r\nGregory Crewdson (born 1962) \r\nUntitled (Temple Street) \r\nFrom the series Beneath the Roses\r\n2006\r\n\r\nCrewdson works on an epic scale with actors and a large crew.
