The bill includes the wire walking act The Hanneford Trio, the juggler Frank Boston, the South American dance duo The Two Hurricanes, Alda & Dorette, and 'Skeets' Martin. It also featured the double act Arthur Astill and Gwen Fontaine, billed as 'Mirth, Mimicry and Ventriloquism', in an act entitled 'Impressions of Country Life' which included the mimicry of birds, animals and children. \r\n\r\nThis hanging card was part of a collection made by Arthur Astill (1887-1962) of advertisements from theatres where he and his wife Gwen Fontaine appeared. It is typical of the format of two-colour printing used in the 1940s to advertise Variety, with the names of the most popular stars literally appearing at the 'top of the bill'. The names of Astill and Fontaine are at the bottom of this bill.\n\n\n","physicalDescription":"Typographic hanging card printed in red and dark green on yellow card advertising twice-nightly variety at the New Hippodrome, King Street Bolton, for the week commencing Monday 12 January 1942, featuring 'the BBC Star' Issy Bonn, 'Britain's greatest star reader', or astrologer, Gipsy Petulengro, the wire-walkers the Hanneford Trio, the juggler Frank Boston, 'Skeets' Martin ('Ole Bill up-to-date'), the Two Hurricane , 'exponents of South American dancing', Alda & Dorette 'Something New and Sensational' and Arthur Astill & Gwen Fontaine.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Richard Whewell Ltd.","id":"A23790"},"association":{"text":"printer","id":"x30811"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"printing ink","id":"AAT187371"},{"text":"card","id":"x30344"}],"techniques":[{"text":"printing","id":"AAT53319"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Letterpress on card","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Advertising","id":"THES49001"},{"text":"Posters","id":"THES252963"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2014HE0657"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES345352"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"posters","id":"AAT27221"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"x46159"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1942","earliest":"1942-01-01","latest":"1942-12-31"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Arthur Astill ","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"38","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"25.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Hanging card advertising the Variety programme at the New Hippodrome, Bolton, for the week beginning Monday 12 January 1942, featuring Issy Bonn, Gipsy Petulengro, the Hanneford Trio, Frank Boston, 'Skeets' Martin, the Two Hurricanes, Alda & Dorette, and Arthur Astill (1887-1962) & Gwen Fontaine(1891-1978).
