Based on the crystal-structure of the mineral Afwillite, it reflects the type of pattern that emerged from the Festival, inspired by crystal-structure diagrams that recorded the arrangements of atoms in substances such as minerals.  The Festival Pattern Group was set up by Mark Hartland Thomas in 1949, who was the chief industrial officer at the Council of Industrial Design.  Thomas felt that these designs reflected perfectly the scientific theme of the Festival which was planned as an exhibition on science, technology and industrial design.
