AARON was conceived (around 1973) as the first in a projected series of programs but in fact Cohen is still working with AARON today. His creation of this program grew out of what he has described as his need 'to understand what art is'. In the process of designing a program to work with random variables, making its own decisions on colouring and composition, he explored the potential inherent in different programming languages. \r\n\r\nInitially AARON produced drawings which were then coloured by Cohen. Most recently he has modified the program so that it chooses and applies the colours itself, resulting in digital prints which are the unmediated work of AARON. Cohen insists that display labels and image credits for prints produced by AARON should read \"Digital print by AARON, a computer program written by Harold Cohen\". To produce prints on this unprecedented scale Cohen has used one of the new wide-format printers, with archival pigment inks.","physicalDescription":"A print of abstracted floral imagery printed in vivid colours, predominantly pinks and blues","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Cohen, Harold","id":"A3453"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Digital print by AARON, a computer program written by Harold Cohen","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Artificial Intelligence","id":"THES392486"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2010EL6973","2006AY5846"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"514","id":"THES49549"},"free":"","case":"TR","shelf":"7","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"United States","id":"x29333"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"May 2003","earliest":"2003-05-01","latest":"2003-05-31"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Harold Cohen","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"127","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"89","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'0305-03'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Title; in pencil, lower left below image"},{"content":"'Harold Cohen May 2003'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Signature and date; in pencil, lower right below image"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Digital inkjet print, abstracted floral imagery in pink and blue, by Harold Cohen, printed United States, 2003","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Harold Cohen: Decoupling Art and Affluence, 05/28/2002:\n\nhttp://web.archive.org/web/20230109152622/https://www.kurzweilai.net/articles/art6046"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Chance and Control: Art in the Age of Computers (2018)\n\nHAROLD COHEN (1928–2016)\r\n<i>0305-03</i>\r\nUSA, 2003\n\r\nThis is one of Harold Cohen’s later artworks, produced using his AARON computer program and a large-format digital printer.
