This one is set with small portrait medallions to commemorate the marriage of Queen Victoria to Prince Albert on 10 February 1840. The couple commissioned a range of gifts for wedding guests - the bridesmaids were each given a turquoise eagle shaped brooch designed by Albert whilst six dozen gold and blue-enamelled rings set with the medallion portraits of the couple were ordered from the royal goldsmiths Rundell's to be distributed to friends. Male guests were presented with an enamelled gold propelling pencil case set with a turquoise and portraits of the couple. \n\nSampson Mordan and Isaac Hawkins submitted a patent in 1822 for a mechanical pencil holder or porte-crayon 'pens for facilitating writing and drawing by rendering the frequent cutting or mending of the nibs or points unnecessary' (patent 4742). The nineteenth century saw a flood of innovations in writing technology with the development of fountain pens, better quills and mechanical pencils which gradually replaced the traditional quill and ink.
