Such work was much practised in western India, especially in and around Bombay, for which reason such objects were described under the blanket heading 'Bombay boxes.' \r\n\r\nProfusely carved sandalwood panels of this type are typical of Bombay, but may ultimately have been inspired by the famous carved sandalwood boxes of Mysore and Canara, which were much admired in the late 19th century.
