Pleated silk over a metal frame is a conventional way to make such an object, but the designer has subverted the form of the lamp by giving it the shape of a figure-of-eight. It is almost as if two circular lamp-shades had been grafted together, or one lampshade, like a single-cell creature, was in the process of dividing.
