The unknown artist has included the traditional indications of royalty, the halo and parasol, derived from Mughal painting. \r\nThe portrait was given to the museum in 1953 by O.E. Dickinson, the great-nephew of Lord Auckland, Governor-General of India (1836-1842), who brought it back to England in 1842. Lord Auckland had visited the Sikh court in 1838 where he must have acquired this painting, with six others that were also given to the museum.","physicalDescription":"Painted in opaque watercolour and gold on paper, Ranjit Singh, wearing a dark green coat and trousers and a yellow turban, rides a white stallion with a red saddle-cloth edged with gold. He faces right. An attendant in green turban and yellow jama holds a red parasol flecked with gold over the maharaja. The landscape is sketchily indicated by means of a stippled green foreground with clumps of plants, and a pale blue background.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"opaque watercolour","id":"x35013"},{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"},{"text":"paper","id":"AAT14109"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painted","id":"AAT54216"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Painted in opaque watercolour and gold on paper","categories":[{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"},{"text":"Animals and Wildlife","id":"THES250852"},{"text":"Royalty","id":"THES48899"},{"text":"Sikhism","id":"THES48894"},{"text":"Bonita Trust Indian Paintings Cataloguing Project","id":"THES263148"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2013GD6464","2019ME7164"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"006","id":"THES403772"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"painting","id":"AAT33618"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Punjab Plains","id":"x35287"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1838 - ca. 1840","earliest":"1833-01-01","latest":"1844-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"IS.112-1953","id":"O70557"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"IS.113-1953","id":"O79148"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"IS.114-1953","id":"O70023"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"IS.115-1953","id":"O79149"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"IS.116-1953","id":"O79150"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"IS.117-1953","id":"O79151"},"association":""}],"creditLine":"Given by O.
