The goldsmith Louis Roupert is shown next to a vase of acanthus leaves holding a sheet with acanthus decoration on it. These, and the tools on the table next to him, suggest that he is a goldsmith.\r\n\r\nThe rolling acanthus was a popular motif in ancient Rome, and was much copied by Renaissance artists. The use of the scrolling acanthus leaf was an essential part of the goldsmith’s skill from about the mid 17th century to the end of the 18th century. Ornament prints like these were copied by artisans working in different fields, and were responsible for spreading the influence of various decorative styles.","physicalDescription":"Print, portrait of the goldsmith Louis Roupert, engraving after Pierre Rabon.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Cossin, Louis","id":"A15064"},"association":{"text":"engraver","id":"AAT25165"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Rabon, Pierre","id":"A15065"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":"after"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Engraving on paper","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Portraits","id":"THES48906"},{"text":"Ornament prints","id":"THES49038"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006BH8087","2011FC7660"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"EO","shelf":"38","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1668","earliest":"1668-01-01","latest":"1668-12-31"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"16.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"22.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Portrait of the goldsmith Louis Roupert, engraving by Louis Cossin, [Coquin] after Pierre Rabon, France, 1668","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[{"text":"Roupert, Louis","id":"N4662"}],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"men","id":"AAT25928"},{"text":"portraits","id":"AAT15637"},{"text":"goldsmiths","id":"AAT25319"},{"text":"vases","id":"AAT132254"},{"text":"print-making tool","id":"x38935"},{"text":"equipment","id":"AAT122241"},{"text":"goldsmithing","id":"AAT54048"},{"text":"designs","id":"AAT102051"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"PRINT: PORTRAIT OF THE GOLDSMITH LOUIS ROUPERT\r\nFrench, 1668\r\nEngraving by Louis Coquin after Pierre Rabon, published in Paris\r\n\r\n28787\r\n\r\nFrom about 1650 to 1800 the use of the scrolling acanthus leaf was an essential part of the goldsmith's skill.
