The scrolling acanthus was a much-used motif in ancient Rome, and was copied by Renaissance artists. The use of the scrolling acanthus leaf was an essential part of the goldsmith’s skill from about the mid 17th century to the end of the 18th century. Ornament prints like these were copied by artisans working in different fields, and were responsible for spreading the influence of various decorative styles.","physicalDescription":"Print of an acanthus frieze, etching, decorated with richly scrolling Roman acanthus enclosing boys and dogs, a stag hunt and a boar hunt which takes place among oak scrolls.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Le Pautre, Jean","id":"A15057"},"association":{"text":"etcher","id":"AAT25174"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Etching on paper","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Architectural fittings","id":"THES48994"},{"text":"Ornament prints","id":"THES49038"},{"text":"Hunting","id":"THES253059"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2012FL0953"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"EO","shelf":"86","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1660","earliest":"1655-01-01","latest":"1664-12-31"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"10.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"30.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"The richly scrolling Roman acanthus was eagerly taken up by designers of the 1600s, who not only used other plants but added more figures.
