The raw material had been used for centuries in the East, but only in the late 19th century did it begin to established its presence in the West often as a household product such as a mat. Initially, European business men set up businesses in Kerala, India, centred around the town of Alleppey.\r\n\r\nIt is likely that this design was created in the 1920s or early 1930s possibly by a company set up by native entrepreneurs in Alleppey or possibly by European designers in London. The object draws on the Western styles of the period, using Art Deco motifs, and thus seems to have been designed for a European or an American market. At the same time, there is an overt Oriental influence. The group of designs to which it belongs makes frequent use of figurative botanical motifs, multiple wavy lines and flecks which differentiates it from classic Art Deco designs of the period.","physicalDescription":"A rectangular piece of cream card showing a brown rectangular design. Within this is a smaller brown and green rectangle with an orange triangle in the centre. Two larger triangular shapes point either side towards the smaller rectangular. These triangular shapes are brown cream, orange and green and designed in a abstract fashion. The overall background of the design is in varying shades of coffee coloured brown.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"The Kerala Coir Manufacturing Company","id":"A29364"},"association":{"text":"designed by","id":"x40048"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"watercolour on paper","id":"x32486"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"watercolour on paper","categories":[{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2010EC2004"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"MD","shelf":"43","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"design","id":"AAT102051"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Kerala","id":"x29830"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"c.1920","earliest":"1915-01-01","latest":"1924-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the American Friends of the V&A through the generosity of Leslie, Judith and Gabri Schreyer and Alice Schreyer Batko.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"14","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"The design is labelled '592' on the front at the centre bottom.
