The fronts, collar, pocket welts and revers are made of cream silk taffeta.  Two painted silk medallions, one depicting Justice and the other Hercules, have been applied below each pocket welt.  The waistcoat is embroidered to shape with silk floss in white, brown and shades of pink and green, in a pattern of flowers, insects, crowns and ribbons on the collar, pocket welts, and along the front edges and hems.  There are 10 worked buttonholes on the left front and 7 embroidered buttons on the right front edge.\r\n\r\nThe waistcoat was altered in the late 19th century, probably for theatre costume or a studio prop.  The back was replaced, the fronts stitched to another waistcoat and later, the sides taken in.\r\n","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silk (textile)","id":"AAT243428"},{"text":"silk (textile)","id":"AAT243428"},{"text":"silk thread","id":"x30127"},{"text":"paint","id":"AAT15029"}],"techniques":[{"text":"hand weaving","id":"AAT53643"},{"text":"painting","id":"x30598"},{"text":"hand embroidery","id":"x30339"},{"text":"hand sewing","id":"AAT257459"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silk, paint; hand-woven, hand-embroidered, hand-painted, hand-sewn","categories":[{"text":"Men's clothes","id":"THES49043"},{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2019MH1794","2019MH1795","2019MH1796","2019MH1792","2019MH1793"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"018","id":"THES310520"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Waistcoat","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1790-1799","earliest":"1790-01-01","latest":"1799-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"1870-1910","earliest":"1870-01-01","latest":"1910-12-31"},"association":{"text":"altered","id":"AAT105442"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"From the collection of the late Miss Kathleen Dawson of Chelsea, given by her sister Miss Marion Dawson","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Weight","value":"0.42","unit":"kg","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"54.0","unit":"cm","qualifier":"approx","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"top of right collar to hem","note":""},{"dimension":"Circumference","value":"105.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"approx","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"chest under armholes","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Man's waistcoat, 1790s, French; Cream silk taffeta, embroidered, applied painted medallions, altered 1870-1910","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["T.365A-1920"],"accessionNumberNum":"365","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":1920,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-03-13","recordCreationDate":"2009-11-18","availableToBook":true}}
