The company began as an importer of French wallpapers, and in due course began to distribute English wallpapers too. It did not begin to manufacture its own papers until Arthur Sanderson acquired premises for printing in Chiswick, West London, in 1879. This wallpaper border comes from a log book containing 53 specimens of wallpaper borders and corners, and probably represents the products of various companies for which Sanderson & Sons were then acting as agents.\r\n\r\nThis border is typical of the richly-coloured and elaborate designs, popular in the mid-19th century, which were pastiches of historical styles; this pattern combines classical motifs with the gilding and trompe l'oeil moulding characteristic of the Victorian interpretations of Renaissance decoration.","physicalDescription":"Wallpaper border with running ornamentation and a heavy scrolling acanthus pattern, in 'gold' on a dark ground; Colour print from wood blocks, on paper.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Arthur Sanderson & Sons Ltd.","id":"A6395"},"association":{"text":"suppliers","id":"AAT25252"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"colour woodblock print","id":"x37101"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Colour woodblock print, on paper","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Wall coverings","id":"THES48878"}],"styles":[{"text":"Victorian","id":"AAT21232"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AU4132","2008BT5320"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC (VA)","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"1A","shelf":"DW","box":"45"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}],[{"text":"wallpaper","id":""}],[{"text":"wallpaper border","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1840-1870","earliest":"1840-01-01","latest":"1870-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the Wallpaper Manufacturers Ltd","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"26.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"43.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Given by the Wallpaper Manufacturers Ltd.\r\nProvenance: A log book of Arthur Sanderson & Sons.\r\nThe printing blocks were destroyed 1874-80.","historicalContext":"This type of heavy scrolling acanthus frieze was first used on Roman buildings in the Corinthian order.","briefDescription":"Wallpaper border with running ornamentation and a heavy scrolling acanthus pattern, in 'gold' on a dark ground; Colour print from wood blocks, on paper; Supplied by Arthur Sanderson & Sons Ltd., England; 1840-50.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Oman, Charles C., and Hamilton, Jean. <u>Wallpapers: a history and illustrated catalogue of the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum</u>.
