Barometers and thermometers offered elegant evidence of the owner's intellectual interests. This barometer is paired with a matching thermometer (Museum no. 1096-1882) and both are finely veneered in tulipwood and kingwood to take their place beside the finest furniture of a study or the small, personal rooms known as cabinets in France. The pair of instruments was acquired by John Jones, a British military tailor, in the 19th century. He was one of the best-known collectors of French 18th-century decorative arts and in 1882 he bequeathed his collection to the South Kensington Museum, the forerunner of the V&A.","physicalDescription":"The barometer is mounted on a tall, narrow back panel, veneered in tulipwood and kingwood, with fillets of holly and purpleheart under the glass tube. The edges of the panel are framed with gilt-bronze mouldings. The top is a shallow arch and the gilt-bronze mounts show small foliage mounts at the corners and in the centre of the top and bottom. At the top of the panel the tube is flanked with white enamel plaques, painted in black with the different types of weather, and with the maker's name.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Bourbon, Lange de","id":"A15033"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wood","id":"AAT11914"},{"text":"tulipwood","id":"AAT12469"},{"text":"kingwood","id":"x35086"},{"text":"holly","id":"AAT12156"},{"text":"purpleheart","id":"AAT12419"},{"text":"gilt bronze","id":"x35084"},{"text":"enamel","id":"AAT14910"},{"text":"glass","id":"AAT10797"}],"techniques":[{"text":"veneered","id":"AAT53878"},{"text":"chased","id":"AAT54016"},{"text":"gilded","id":"AAT53789"},{"text":"glass-blowing","id":"AAT53932"},{"text":"enamelled","id":"x30139"},{"text":"cast","id":"x32615"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Veneered in tulipwood and kingwood, holly and purpleheart, on a carcase of unidentified wood; the glass of the barometer is flanked by white enamel plaques marked in black enamel","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"},{"text":"Science","id":"THES48898"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2006AK6713","2010EC9400","2006AK6715","2019LX7148"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"SM005","id":"THES301659"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Barometer","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1750-1760","earliest":"1745-01-01","latest":"1760-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by John Jones","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"94","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"15.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions taken from Carolyn Sargentson's cataloguing notes","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"TRE[grave accent]S/SEC\r\nBEAU/FINE\r\nBEAU/TEMPS\r\nTEMPS/VARIABLES\r\nPLUYE/OU VENT\r\nGRANDE/PLUYE\r\nTEM/PE[circonflex]TRE\r\nLANGE DE/BOURBON","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"These inscriptions are read across the two plaques, with the split coming at the point of the forward slash"}],"objectHistory":"Acquired by John Jones before 1882","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Mounted on a tall, narrow panel, veneered in tulipwood and kingwood, the edges mounted in gilt bronze, the face set with white enamel plaques with black inscriptions, including the name of the maker","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"BAROMETER AND THERMOMETER\nFRENCH (Paris); 1755-70\nBoth inscribed 'Lange de Bourbon'\nVeneered with kingwood and tulipwood; gilt-bronze mounts; enamel plaques\nLittle is known of Lange de Bourbon, whose name is found on several barometers of this period, and who is recorded as 'Faiseur De Barometre du Roy' (Maker of Barometers to the King) around 1770.
