London : South Kensington Museum, 1874.","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"This is a design for an engraving.","historicalContext":"</i>Ceremonies et Coutumes Religieuses de tous les Peuples du Monde</i> was published in seven volumes, between 1723 and 1737, by Jean-Frédéric Bernard (publisher and book dealer) and Bernard Picart (illustrator and print-maker).\r\n\r\nThis was an early attempt at the study and comparison of different religions from around the world. It contained many illustrations, over 250 prints and a number of vignettes, partly drawn and executed by Bernard Picart. Picart’s method of creating these illustrations is noteworthy as he had no first-hand experience of some of the ceremonies and costumes he depicted, for example those of India. However, living in Amsterdam, he had access to diverse sources of information, namely illustrations from Western travel books and Indian miniatures.
