London : South Kensington Museum, 1874."},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Ward-Jackson, Peter, <u>Italian Drawings Volume I. 14th-16th century</u>, London: Her Majesty's Stationary Office, 1979, p. 204.\n\nThe text is as follows:\n\nEMILIA: mid 16th century\n\n444\r\n\nThe Madonna della Ghiara worshipped by a kneeling bishop, a kneeling nun holding up an ex-voto in the form of a human leg, and St Euphema with three lions ar her feet and a sword in her breast\r\nInscribed in ink with teo indistinct words that appear to read ‘Madon Ton’\r\nPen and ink and blue wash heightened with white\r\n15 3/8 x 18 7/8 (391 x 478)\t\t\t\tDyce 560\r\n\nPROVENANCE Dyce Bequest 1869\r\n\nLITERATURE <i>Dyce Catalogue</i> no. 560 (as by Jacques Bellange)\r\n\r\nThe old attribution to Bellange was discarded some years ago and the drawing was called anonymous, French school. But it is probably Italian. The Virgin and Child are copied from the well known picture knwn as the Madonna della Ghiara in the church of the same name in Reggio Emilia. Lelio Orsi provided the design, which is dated 1569. The image was the subject of a popular cult in Northern Italy and copies of it were worhsipped in Modena, Bologna, Vicenza, Mirandola, Fivizzano and other towns.
