With music by John Bishop the three act comedy with songs was originally performed at Covent Garden Theatre, 12 March 1816, with John Liston as the learned but socially inept schoolmaster Dominie Sampson who meets Guy Mannering in Scotland along with the gypsy woman Meg Merrilies who has come to tell the fortune of the newly-born Henry Bertram. Liston played the role agaoin when the play was recvived at the Theatre Royal Haymarket on 13 September 1820.\n\nJohn Liston (1776-1846) achieved his greatest successes in farce, particularly as the busybody Paul Pry in John Poole's eponymous 1825 comedy, but was well known for several other roles which were reproduced in drawings, painting, engravings and figurines. An expert dancer, he became the highest-paid comedian on the stage, earning between sixty and a hundred pounds a week at the Olympic Theatre in the 1830s, a huge salary for his day. He retired in 1837 after a career spanning over thirty years.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Jameson, J.
