Seated at a table at the rear of a stage are the actor-managers Robert Wilkes, Colley Cibber and Barton Booth, with puppets of Punch and Harlequin on the table in front of them. Booth, right, holds another puppet over the hole of a privy where pages from Shakespeare's plays are available as toilet paper. Above the men hang four ropes ending in nooses, from one of which is suspended an unfortunate musician with a violin, Around them are stage properties and statues satirising the decay of good taste. To either side are classical statues representing Tragedy, at left, and Comedy, at right, their faces hidden by papers secured by nails hammered into their heads. The paper on Tragedy reads 'Harlequin Dr. Faustus', the paper on Comedy reads 'Harlequin Shepherd'. 'Ben Johnsons Ghost', crowned with laurels and holding a candle, rises from a trapdoor, left, and urinates on the broken statue of a Roman warrior.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Hogarth, William","id":"A8514"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Longmans, Green & Co.","id":"AUTH326002"},"association":{"text":"publisher","id":"x32600"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"printing ink","id":"AAT187371"}],"techniques":[{"text":"engraving","id":"AAT53225"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Engraving","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2010EK1764"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES356742"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"prints","id":"AAT41273"}],[{"text":"engravings","id":"AAT41340"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"01/07/1808","earliest":"1808-07-01","latest":"1808-07-01"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Accepted by HM Government in lieu of Inheritance Tax and allocated to the Victoria and Albert Museum, 1996","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"21.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"29.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Engraving, A Just View of the British Stage, satirising the managers of Drury Lane Theate, 1808","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["S.79-1997"],"accessionNumberNum":"79","accessionNumberPrefix":"S","accessionYear":1997,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-01-27","recordCreationDate":"2009-10-20","availableToBook":true}}
