His career began as a child star in 1964 performing with his brothers in The Jackson Five, a band master-minded and managed by his ambitious father Joseph Walter 'Joe' Jackson, a steel mill worker who performed with an R&B band called The Falcons. Michael Jackson began working as a solo performer in 1971 and his album Thriller became the best-selling album ever. His early rise to fame however, his troubled relationship with his father and loss of a normal childhood has often been considered to result in his obsession with his image, his love of the fictional character Peter Pan and his many adult insecurities. Surrounded by advisors but beset with financial problems, Jackson resorted to medication to help him overcome the stress of preparing for This Is It, the series of fifty extravagant concerts planned to run between 16 July 2009 and 6 March 2010 at the O2 centre.\r\n\r\nTickets for the concerts were sold out as soon as they were announced in March 2009. This ladies' t-shirt was one of a range of merchandise which was manufactured for sale at the O2. The final rehearsals were underway when Jackson died of cardiac arrest on 25 June 2009 at his rented home in the Holmby Hills area of Los Angeles, having been injected with mediation. This t-shirt is a tangible link to a concert that never happened, and with one of arguably the greatest and most influential pop stars of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.","physicalDescription":"Ladies' red cotton and elastane t-shirt printed in black, white and pink with an image of Michael Jackson and the words 'KING OF POP LONDON The O2 2009'","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Starworld Clothing","id":"A28760"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"cotton","id":"AAT183670"},{"text":"elastane","id":"x33568"}],"techniques":[{"text":"screen printing","id":"AAT53281"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silk-screen printed cotton and elastane","categories":[{"text":"Clothing","id":"THES48975"},{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2019MK3874"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES344260"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"t-shirt","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Egypt","id":"x29512"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"United Kingdom","id":"x29336"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2009","earliest":"2009-01-01","latest":"2009-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"2009","earliest":"2009-01-01","latest":"2009-12-31"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"54.0","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"62.0","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"maximum","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"The weight of cotton used in this t-shirt is 170gsm (grams per metre)","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Label woven with image of a blue globe with white stars, the brand name Starworld, the code 410 and the letter M for 'Medium'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Produced as souvenir merchandising for Michael Jackson's series of This Is Itconcerts, scheduled to take place at London's O2 Centre between 16 July 2009 and 6 March 2010, but cancelled due to his death on 25 June 2009 while still in rehearsal.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Souvenir t-shirt produced by the O2 Centre, London, as merchandising for Michael Jackson's This Is It series of concerts due to take place at London's O2 Centre, summer 2009.
