Volume II. 17th-18th century</u>, London, 1979, pp. 81-82\r\n\t\r\nThe following is the full text of the entry:\r\n\r\nA helmeted soldier, seated\r\nInscribed on the back of the mount in a late 18th century or early nineteenth century hand 'Count Algerotti's Collect/at Venice', and again in a different hand 'Di Salvator Rosa'; inscribed on the front of the mount in pencil in a more recent hand ‘Salvator Rosa (from Algarotti’s Collection)\r\n\r\nPen and ink and wash with traces of black\r\nchalk\r\n5 ¼ X 6 ½ (133 X 165)\tDyce 349\r\n\r\nPROVENANCE Francesco Algarotti (according to the inscriptions); Dyce Bequest 1869\r\n\r\nLITERATURE Dyce Catalogue no. 349 (as by Rosa); I. Moskowitz, Great drawings of all time, New York, 1962, I, pl. 285 (as by Rosa); Mahoney, 57.2 ff; Exhibition Catalogue, Salvator Rosa, London, Hayward Gallery, 1973, no 69 and pl.30. (Mahoney wrote the drawings catalogue)\r\n\r\nMahoney suggests a date c. 1649-60.  The figure in the drawing resembles the etched ‘figurina’, Bartsch 50, only the other way round.
