Volume I. 14th-16th century</u>,  London, 1979, p. 16\r\n\r\nThe following is the full text of the entry:\r\n\r\nGOZZOLI, BENOZZO \r\nBenozzo di Lese di Sandro, <i>known as</i> Benozzo Gozzoli ( 1420-97) \r\n\r\n6 \r\n<i>Recto</i> Sheet of studies: Virgin and Child with two angels, a saint worshipping, a youth seated on a stool, and another figure \r\n<i>Verso</i> More studies: a seated nun and three shepherds, one kneeling in worship, another playing on the bagpipes and the third carrying a sheep on his shoulders \r\n\r\nPen and ink and wash heightened with white on pink tinted paper\r\nSize of sheet: 5 7/8 x 7 7/8 (150 x 200)\r\n\r\nPROVENANCE Lagoy (Lugt 1710); Dyce Bequest 1869 \r\n\r\nLITERATURE Dyce <i>Catalogue</i> no. 173 (as anonymous, ascribed to Benozzo Gozzoli); Reitlinger, p. 5, no. 3; Borenius, p. 224; R. van Marle, <i>Italian Schools of Painting</i>, The Hague, 11, 1929, p. 220 and fig. 141; BB, 1938, I, p. 11, footnote no. 2, and 2, p. 51, no. 544 \r\n\r\nThe attribution to Gozzoli is accepted by all the writers named. Berenson writes of 'this splendid but unfortunately blackened drawing' that 'here Benozzo displays all his charm and attains to a spirit and freedom of touch which places him as a draughtsman somewhere close to Carpaccio'. The oxidised whites have since been restored and the drawing is no longer blackened.
