The term Cizhou encapsulates a range of wares made in several regions of northern China, often consisting of a stoneware body decorated with a bold design. \r\nCeramic pillows were an important item in the kilns producing Cizhou wares, and were made for both funerary use and as a neck support for the living. The stoneware body of this piece has taken on the shape of a lion through clever use of moulding and incising techniques, and brightly coloured glazes. Lions were sacred animals to Buddhists, so this pillow would have had a special meaning for its owner.","physicalDescription":"Cizhou ware ceramic pillow with crouching lion base, incised and moulded decorations and coloured glazes.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"stoneware","id":"x30197"}],"techniques":[{"text":"moulded","id":"x30076"},{"text":"incised","id":"AAT53847"},{"text":"glazed","id":"AAT53914"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Stoneware, incised, moulded and glazed","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"}],"styles":[{"text":"Jin","id":"x35674"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2006BB5058"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"44 (VA)","id":"THES49802"},"free":"","case":"CA026","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"PILLOW","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"China","id":"x29398"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1175-1250","earliest":"1175-01-01","latest":"1250-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"12","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"21.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Pillow with crouching lion base, incised and moulded stoneware with coloured glazes, Cizhou ware, China, Jin dynasty, 1175-1250","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Kerr, Rose.
