His 'Large Passion' series is  a vivid and animated rendering of the gospel story. \r\n\r\nThe Roman governor Pontius Pilate offered to spare Christ’s life and release him. Here, the hostile mob insist that they want him crucified. Dürer has given the faces in the crowd grotesque expressions to reflect the wickedness of their actions.
