After working as a Hollywood costumier, Norell worked from 1928 until 1941 for New York fashion designer Hattie Carnegie. In the early 1940s Anthony Traina invited Norell to go into business and together they formed the company Traina-Norell. \r\n\r\nThis black silk crepe dress is an example of Norell's stylish post-war designs under the Traina-Norell lable which utilised a narrow silhouette yet did not over-emphasize the economies of post-war clothing manufacture.
