The open-mouthed horse is painted with white gloss (possibly a restoration) and is very chipped. The nose, ears and tongue are painted red, the eyes are made from glass, and the grooved main line and hooves are black. The saddle is carved with a high pommel and back and is covered with leather. The leather for the seat is missing but is present for the skirts, it is held by large tacks. There are the remains of leather stirrups nailed at the top to the seat area. There are the remains of a leather chest strap with a small red leather breast plate and a metal medallion. There is no hair remaining on the mane, but there is a stump of white horsehair left at the tail.\r\n","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Gamages","id":"AUTH316244"},"association":{"text":"retailers","id":"AAT25246"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"The Star Manufacturing Company","id":"AUTH349813"},"association":{"text":"manufacturers","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wood","id":"AAT11914"},{"text":"leather","id":"AAT11845"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"},{"text":"painting (coating)","id":"AAT161986"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Carved and painted wood, leather","categories":[{"text":"Children & Childhood","id":"THES48980"},{"text":"Animals and Wildlife","id":"THES250852"},{"text":"Play","id":"THES274366"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"YVA","id":"THES48593"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES343422"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"rocking Horse","id":"AAT211216"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1906-1914","earliest":"1906-01-01","latest":"1914-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by West Ham Church of England Primary School","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"113.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"137.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"40.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measurements taken from paper records, not checked on object.","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"156645","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Serial number - on metal plate nailed to seat area."}],"objectHistory":"This object was used by children at West Ham Church of England Primary School, Portway, London E15 until the school donated it to the Museum in 1984 [84/561]\r\n\r\nOn entry to the Museum its condition was noted: 'painted wood very chipped, severe break along joint of head and neck'.","historicalContext":"The Bronko was marketed as a 'Safety Hobby Horse' and was specially made for Gamages to their own design. By 1924, Gamages copyright seems to have expired and the horse was sold in only two sizes: 41 inches and 52 inches long.\n\nThe Star Manufacturing Company may have made Bronko rocking horses on behalf of Gamages.
