Along with Jean-Baptiste Colbert, Louis XIV's Minister of Finance, the King began a sustained campaign to elevate the standards of luxury goods produced in France and eliminate imports. Having centralised the site of production, the very best artists and craftsmen were then sourced from across Europe to provide the manufactory with the sound foundation it needed to supplant its foreign competitors. The name Gobelins has since become synonymous with high-warp tapestries.\r\n\r\nThis tapestry sample is one of eight pieces worked by pupils of the National Manufactory of the Gobelins in 1878. They were presented to the V&A Museum by the French Minister for State Education, to demonstrate the continued skill of the celebrated French workshop.","physicalDescription":"Tapestry sample, woven with coloured worsteds on string warps, depicting a blue scroll with a woven inscription commemorating the Ecole de Tapisserie et de Tapis at the Gobelins, on a maroon ground bordered in navy blue .","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Gobelins Tapestry Manufactory","id":"A14749"},"association":{"text":"makers","id":"AAT251917"},"note":"students of"}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wool","id":"x40131"},{"text":"string","id":"AAT14249"}],"techniques":[{"text":"weaving","id":"AAT53642"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Tapestry woven with coloured worsteds on string warps","categories":[{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Tapestry","id":"THES48887"},{"text":"Wall coverings","id":"THES48878"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006BF1977","2006AY9849","2011EU3734"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"008","id":"THES309948"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Tapestry","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1878","earliest":"1878-01-01","latest":"1878-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by His Excellency Monsieur Bardoux, Ministre de L'instruction Publique, des Cultes, et des Beaux Arts","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"45","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"65","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'France\r\nManufacture Nationale des Gobelins\r\n1878\r\nEcole de Tapisserie et de Tapis'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Woven inscription in the centre"}],"objectHistory":"This exhibition piece returns to the curled-paper origins of the cartouche.
