Beechwood covered in boiled and tooled leather.  Iron hinges with rides [ride, ridge from French].\r\n\r\nRectangular form (ichnography) and flat-topped lid.\r\n\r\nOn the lid, below a legend in Gothic letter, two pairs of niches of Gothic architectural arcaded form containing standing figures, as follows (left to right).\r\n\r\n1 St George (with spurs and shield) and the Dragon.\r\n\r\n2 A female saint, with sword pointed vertically downwards in her right hand.  \r\n\r\n3 A saint bishop in mitre, a crozier in his left hand.\r\n\r\n4 A female saint holding a column on tower in her right hand and a palm branch in her left hand (St Barbara or St Vibiana?) \r\n\r\nThree hinges and openwork sides of late Gothic form erroneously placed to the front of the lid.  On the sides, a pair of iron loops and formal leaf pattern.  On the front and rear, similar formal leaves.  On the base diapered leather covering.  Interior plain, with traces of paper lining.\r\n\r\nGERMAN or FLEMISH' 14th and 15th century\r\n\r\nFormerly lent, then given, by Dr W.L Hildburgh, FSA.\r\n\r\nNo negatives (1956)\r\n\r\nGeneral Remarks\r\n\r\nProvenance or place of purchase by donor not recorded.  Reading of inscription under consideration (1956).  There are marked differences in the quality of the ornament on box and on lid.
