It was at the Villa Medici in Rome by 1598, first appearing in the inventory of the Medici collection that century. The vase was widely copied, and appeared in many prints in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This print by Stefano Della Bella is one of the earliest. The vase, with acanthus leaf carving, is thought to show Ulysses, Agamemnon and Iphigenia. Here it is shown in the gardens of the Villa: the boy is probably the Medici heir who later became Grand Duke Cosimo III.","physicalDescription":"Print, etching of a boy drawing the Medici vase in a garden setting.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Bella, Stefano della","id":"A8139"},"association":{"text":"printmaker","id":"AAT25164"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"etched","id":"x37737"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Etching on paper","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Vases","id":"THES48879"},{"text":"Ornament prints","id":"THES49038"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006BA0584"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"EO","shelf":"14","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Italy","id":"x28927"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1656","earliest":"1656-01-01","latest":"1656-12-31"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"29","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"25.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"The Medici Vase, now in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, is a Roman marble made about 50-100 AD.
