At non-charity schools, many of them founded in the nineteenth century, pupils usually had no uniforms, but wore their own clothes. From the late 19th century onward, such schools began to adopt complete uniforms in their own colours, often with a motto and school song, to give pupils a sense of school identity. Competition between schools at sport had popularised the wearing of identifying colours and garments by the teams, and many of the uniform garments were derived from sportswear, including gymslips, ties, scarves, caps and blazers.","physicalDescription":"Girl's school uniform hat of blue-black velour with a curved brim, and a hat band of maroon and blue petersham ribbon with a bow to one side. The badge at the front of the hat band shows a female profile head in yellow and black on grey, within maroon and yellow concentric circles, with a motto and the initials GPDST. A hat elastic is attached to the artificial silk lining band.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":"probably"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"velour","id":"x35308"},{"text":"artificial silk","id":"x34782"},{"text":"petersham ribbon","id":"x30434"}],"techniques":[{"text":"blocking","id":"AAT257611"},{"text":"steaming","id":"x44848"},{"text":"stitching","id":"AAT53660"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Velour lined with artificial silk; petersham ribbon","categories":[{"text":"Children's clothes","id":"THES48979"},{"text":"Children & Childhood","id":"THES48980"},{"text":"Education & Learning","id":"THES252542"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"YVA","id":"THES48593"},"images":["2019ME7837"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"SR011","id":"THES341117"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Hat","id":""}],[{"text":"school uniform","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"UK","id":"x29336"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1940-49","earliest":"1940-01-01","latest":"1949-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Susan Pittman","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Circumference","value":"58.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"around inside base of crown","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"ALL VELOUR/ \"Ridgmont\" MAKE/ 100% British","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"maker's mark","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""},{"content":"KNOWLEDGE IS NOW NO MORE A FOUNTAIN SEALED","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"School motto","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""},{"content":"GPDST","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"Girls Public Day School Trust","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Worn by the donor, Susan Pittman née Mills, and marked with her name tape.
