At non-charity schools, many of them founded in the nineteenth century, pupils usually had no uniforms, but wore their own clothes. From the late 19th century onward, such schools began to adopt complete uniforms in their own colours, often with a motto and school song, to give pupils a sense of school identity. Competition between schools at sport had popularised the wearing of identifying colours and garments by the teams, and many of the uniform garments were derived from sportswear, including gymslips, ties, scarves, caps and blazers.","physicalDescription":"GIrl's school uniform knickers of unbleached white machine-knit stockinette with a double gusset at the crotch, and elasticated waist and legs.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Cherub","id":"AUTH338916"},"association":{"text":"manufacturers","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"stockinette","id":"x42953"},{"text":"elastic","id":"x29976"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Machine knitted stockinette, elastic","categories":[{"text":"Children & Childhood","id":"THES48980"},{"text":"Education & Learning","id":"THES252542"},{"text":"Children's clothes","id":"THES48979"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"YVA","id":"THES48593"},"images":["2025PF7576"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES343657"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Knickers","id":""}],[{"text":"school uniform","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"UK","id":"x29336"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1942 - 1952","earliest":"1942-01-01","latest":"1952-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Susan Pittman","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"29.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"centre back","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Worn by the donor, Susan Pittman née Mills, and marked with her name tape.
