It is a later impression after the plate has worn significantly. There is evidence of reworked engraved lines in the top of the censer, including the fleur-de-lys decoration on the left side and its strengthened curved outline.\n\nIn the collection there are four engravings of the same subject by Marcantonio Raimondi, after Raphael, but printed from a different plate and in the reverse orientation (E.4660-1910, E.3847-1906, DYCE.1059 and E.4314-1919). The Raimondi prints have the addition of festoon leaves in the central column and vertical engraved lines in the background.\n\r\nIt is generally understood that Marco da Ravenna created his engraving after Raimondi, however it is noted by Elizabeth Miller that it is possible the engraving by da Ravenna was created before Raimondi.\n\r\nThere is also a later copy of the Raimondi engraving by an unknown printmaker which is inscribed ‘R’ (DYCE.1060), as well as a later copy of the da Ravenna composition in etching (29463) by another unknown printmaker dating to the 18th century.","physicalDescription":"Print, engraving of a perfume burner with caryatids.
