On a more practical level, although a white garment showed dirt and stains more readily than a dark coloured one, it had an advantage in being more easily washed, boiled, or bleached. Good quality coloured fabrics were often more expensive; the colours might fade, and some dyes were even poisonous, particularly green, which sometimes contained arsenic.","physicalDescription":"Child's coat of white cotton piqué. The yoked single-breasted coat has a round neck with a shaped fall collar edged with braid insertion and a deep scalloped frill of hand-stitched cutwork. The wrist-length sleeves are gathered into a turn-back cuff of self fabric edged with insertion braid and a frill of broderie anglaise; the skirt is finished at the hem with another deep scalloped frill of cutwork, lined with white muslin and matching that on the collar. The garment fastens down the front with a hook and eye at the neck and a vertical row of pearlized buttons and stitched buttonholes; the configuration is for a boy (left over right).","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"piqué","id":"AAT249568"},{"text":"braid","id":"AAT232186"},{"text":"muslin","id":"AAT14087"}],"techniques":[{"text":"hand sewing","id":"AAT257459"},{"text":"cutwork (embroidery)","id":"x30146"},{"text":"hand embroidery","id":"x30339"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Cotton piqué, hand sewn and embroidered","categories":[{"text":"Children's clothes","id":"THES48979"},{"text":"Children & Childhood","id":"THES48980"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"YVA","id":"THES48593"},"images":["2025PE9421"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES343664"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"coat","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1895-1900","earliest":"1895-01-01","latest":"1900-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Rosa M J Esdale","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"57.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"centre back","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"22½","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"centre back","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Worn by Avice Mary Rivett (born 30th April 1894 in Heaton Norris, Stockport, Cheshire), later Mrs. Esdale.
