The front bears the incised inscription:  'E.W. 1648.'\n\nBOX\r\nENGLISH: 1648\r\nOak decorated with chip carving. In the centre of the lid is a six-lobed figure formed by a looped and grooved band, the loops being filled in with pear shaped bosses and the other compartments with geometrical designs of sunk pockets, veins and other devices. Round the above is a border composed of quarter circles in the four corners, two semi-circles and two bands, all ornamented with similar designs. The front, back and sides have each a similar scheme of ornamentation, only the front and back have each two, six lobed figures formed by three grooved interlacing bands and the central ornament of the sides consists of a circle surrounded by six intersecting segments of circles.
