Her left hand hangs down, as usual, but in this case her right hand reaches forwards.  There is a feather-like projection above her head and her hair is knotted behind the head but without a plait. The figure is dressed in a pleated skirt cloth with a girdle round her waist and beaded jewellery crossed over her breasts. The slightly modelled lotus on the incised round base is a simplified version of the north east Indian type. The South Indian Museum purchased over 1,000 miscellaneous Indian objects from William Tayler, who went to India in 1829 retiring to England in 1867. Tayler collected pieces for his ‘Indian Museum’ while Postmaster-General of Bengal (1845-50) during which he recorded in his published memoirs that he had visited ‘almost every station in Orissa and Bengal’, as well as ’Darjeeling, Simlah and Nepal’, quoted in Barnard, 2008.
