They originated in the 1440s with the desire to reproduce coins and hardstone engravings from ancient Greece and Rome. Some were made as collector’s pieces, to be viewed and displayed in private, and others for practical purposes. They also inspired designs in other media, from architecture to bookbindings. The fashion for swords decorated with elaborate pommels was at its height around 1500. This shield-shaped plaquette was almost certainly designed for this purpose. Mucius Scaevola was a hero of Roman legend who thrust his hands into flames as proof of his courage. In the Renaissance period he represented patience and constancy.","physicalDescription":"Plaque, bronze, shield-shaped, cast in relief with the subject of Mutius Sceavola before Porsenna. To the right Mucius Scaevola, a young man in armour, holding up a dagger over a burning brazier which stands in front of a pillared building in which are seated two old men. Behind him is a second man in armour carrying a standard with an eagle. To the left are two horsemen riding in, and a third, carrying a banner, reining up his horse to watch. In the sky a decrescent moon; a blank exergue. Raised rim.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Master I.O.F.F.","id":"A14535"},"association":{"text":"makers","id":"AAT251917"},"note":"after a design by"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bronze","id":"AAT10957"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Bronze","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2006AE9877","2009CR8767","2017JV8169"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"111 (VA)","id":"THES49918"},"free":"","case":"DU2","shelf":"DR17","box":"22"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Plaquette mucius scaevola","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Italy","id":"x28927"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1500","earliest":"1495-01-01","latest":"1504-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Plaquette, bronze, after a design by the Master I.O.F.F., Italy, ca. 1500","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"<u>List of Objects in the Art Division South Kensington Museum acquired during the Year 1898.
