These medals are best appreciated when held and turned in the hand. Only this will reveal the intimate relationship of one side to other as intended by the artist. Fortunately contemporary medals are one of the most affordable art forms. The cartoonist Ronald Searle wittily subverts the traditional medal format. Normally there is a portrait on one side and a symbolic image representing the virtue or achievements of the sitter on the reverse. When this medal is turned over, the reverse reveals the back of Pisanello’s head.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Searle, Ronald","id":"A11420"},"association":{"text":"designers","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bronze","id":"AAT10957"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Bronze, struck","categories":[{"text":"Coins & Medals","id":"THES48974"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2006BB2708","2006BB2706"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"111","id":"THES49918"},"free":"","case":"DU2","shelf":"DR16","box":"9"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Medal","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1992","earliest":"1992-01-01","latest":"1992-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"The official Congress medal for the 1992 Fédération Internationale de la Médaille was designed and modelled by Ronald Searle, who has produced several medals for the British Art Medal Society. Struck at the Royal Mint it was issued in limited edition in silver and bronze. The design is humorously and affectionately based on a portrait medal of Pisanello.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Medal, bronze, Antonio Pisanello - 23rd FIDEM Congress, by Ronald Searle, England (London), 1992","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Hill, George Francis. <u>A Corpus of Italian Medals of the Renaissance, Before Cellini, Volume I, Text</u>.
