It was engraved by either Johannes or Lucas Duetecum, and published in Antwerp. \r\n\r\nOrnament designs like this were copied by artisans, who applied them onto furniture, vases, textiles and so on. The theme of the grotesque was a popular one around this period. Grotesque derives from the Italian word <i>grottesco</i>. The style was inspired by ancient Roman designs discovered at the end of the 15th century in the underground rooms, or grottoes, of the Golden House of Emperor Nero in Rome. Grotesque ornament was used to decorate a wide range of objects, such as ceramics, and the style was much copied by Renaissance artists.","physicalDescription":"Engraving","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Floris, Cornelis (II)","id":"A8394"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":"after"},{"name":{"text":"Cock, Hyeronymous","id":"A8256"},"association":{"text":"publisher","id":"x32600"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Doetechum, Lucas van","id":"A14733"},"association":{"text":"engraver","id":"AAT25165"},"note":"possibly"},{"name":{"text":"Doetechum, Jan van (the elder)","id":"A14734"},"association":{"text":"engraver","id":"AAT25165"},"note":"possibly"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"printing ink","id":"AAT187371"}],"techniques":[{"text":"engraving","id":"AAT53225"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Engraving on paper","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Ornament prints","id":"THES49038"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006BA0652","2011FB1574"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"EO","shelf":"18","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Antwerp","id":"x28724"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1557","earliest":"1557-01-01","latest":"1557-12-31"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"30.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"To plate mark","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"20.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"To plate mark","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Lettered 'H' in the lower left corner of the plate.","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Cornelis Floris was a leading Antwerp architect and sculptor who helped to pioneer strapwork (case 23) as well as the fleshy style.
