The original costumes for Les Biches were executed by Mme Vera de Bosset Soudeikine - La maison Julavera.\nThis famous androgynous costume was suggestive of a page-boy's outfit. Marie Laurencin originally designed a longer costume for Vera Nemchinova but according to Lydia Sokolova, Diaghilev himself cut it down at a fitting. When Nemchinova complained of feeling 'naked' (it had become a very exposing costume for the 1920s), Diaghilev advised her to buy some white gloves to wear with it. This would have served a double purpose; women wore gloves in society to be properly dressed and the gloves would draw attention to the movements of the hands.
