The eyes were probably once enamelled. The necks are decorated with filigree. The hoop is formed of plain wires all hammered into a single wire at the point. The loop in the goat's mouth links to the end of the hoop.\r\n\r\nRepresentations of woman wearing similar earrings on terracottas and bronze mirrors suggest that most of these earrings were worn with the head at the front but upside-down.\r\n\r\n Lion-head earrings are the earliest type in the long series of animal-head hoop earrings. They seem to have been first developped in Etruria (Italy) but have been found everywhere in the Greek world.","physicalDescription":"Pair of loop earrings with the head of a goat, Greek world, about 350-200 BC; gold, with twisted wires","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gold, wires","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[{"text":"Hellenistic","id":"AAT20101"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AC6428","2006AC6374"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"91 (VA)","id":"THES49703"},"free":"","case":"2","shelf":"C","box":"9"},{"current":{"text":"91 (VA)","id":"THES49703"},"free":"","case":"2","shelf":"C","box":"9"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Earring","id":""}],[{"text":"Earring","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Greece","id":"x28895"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"350 BC-200 BC","earliest":"-0350-01-01","latest":"-0200-01-01"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Pair of loop earrings with the head of a goat, Greek world, about 350-200 BC; gold, with twisted wires","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"goats","id":"x30394"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["M.1029-1910","M.1029A-1910"],"accessionNumberNum":"1029","accessionNumberPrefix":"M","accessionYear":1910,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Earring [1]","Earring [2]"],"assets":["2019LR2751","2019LR3996","2019LT6941","2019LT6301","2019LU8295","2019LU2999","2021MV2129","2021MV2130"],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-16","recordCreationDate":"2005-04-28","availableToBook":false}}
