All the women wore wigs most of them fastened by headbands which do not survive. The costumes as designed by Roerich in 1913 had wigs with plaits and photographs and Valentine Gross' illustrations show that at least some had multiple plaits like the 8 attached to this wig. This wig also still has examples of the silver cord threaded in the plaits which would have caught the light as the maidens spun and jumped. Shoulder length, dark auburn wig of human and artificial hair, stitched down the centre and plaited with four of the eight long thin plaits of dark brown bass. The wig foundation is made of black 'galloon' (tape) with caul net in the centre with most of the hair stitched with a centre parting rather than knotted. It is held by metal springs at the ears, front and nape. The plaits are woven round an artificial core to obtain  the necessary length and the deteriorated state of the wig gives an insight into its construction.
