Papillons was a ballet in the Beidermere-style of Carnaval. It had been created for a charity performance at the Maryinsky, St Petersburg 23 February 1912 then taken into the repertory of the Imperial Ballet in October. Mikhail Fokine had created the leading roles for himself and Tamara Karsavina, who were also the stars of Diaghilev’s 1914 season. It joined the repertory of Serge Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes Théâtre de Monte Carlo on 16 April 1914. Papillons was revived for de Basil’s Ballets Russes in1936.\r\n\r\nCyril Beaumont wrote that ‘Papillons is a charming ingenious composition, delicate as a butterfly’s wings. The groups, the miming, the pas de deux, and the scene of death and reanimation of the butterfly are full of poetry and tender lyricism characteristic of Fokine’s work in this vein, but the impression afforded is slight and the piece naturally suffers from being a repetition of style.’ The focus in the ballet was on the young girls and Pierrot but at the end other characters, chaperons and servants, appeared to see the girls home.\r\n","physicalDescription":"Costume for a Valet in Fokine's ballet <i>Papillons</i>, consisting of a military-style coat of bright deep blue facecloth trimmed with silver, and an off white cotton dicky.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Bakst, Leon","id":"A5664"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x40048"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"face cloth","id":"x38767"},{"text":"braid","id":"AAT232186"},{"text":"metal","id":"AAT10900"},{"text":"cotton (textile)","id":"AAT14067"}],"techniques":[{"text":"sewing","id":"AAT53658"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Facecloth and silver braid with metal buttons; cotton","categories":[{"text":"Dance","id":"THES252984"},{"text":"Theatre costume","id":"THES268477"},{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2018KT1995","2018KT1996","2018KT1997","2018KT1998"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"014","id":"THES309070"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"014","id":"THES309070"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"theatre costumes","id":"x47007"}],[{"text":"coats","id":"AAT46143"}],[{"text":"Theatre costume","id":""}],[{"text":"dance costume","id":"x34504"}],[{"text":"dickeys","id":"AAT210060"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1914","earliest":"1909-01-01","latest":"1918-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the British Theatre Museum Association","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"86","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"28/03/2018","earliest":"2018-03-28","latest":"2018-03-28"},"part":"Jacket, collar to hem","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"46","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"28/03/2018","earliest":"2018-03-28","latest":"2018-03-28"},"part":"Jacket, across shoulders","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"30","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"28/03/2018","earliest":"2018-03-28","latest":"2018-03-28"},"part":"Dickey, laid flat","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"17","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"28/03/2018","earliest":"2018-03-28","latest":"2018-03-28"},"part":"Dickey, laid flat","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"3.2","unit":"kg","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"28/03/2018","earliest":"2018-03-28","latest":"2018-03-28"},"part":"Total boxed weight of costume","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Sold by the Diaghilev and de Basil Ballet Foundation in the auction by Sothebys of Costumes and Curtains from The Daghilev and de Basil Ballets at the Chenil Galleries on 3 March 1973 as part of Lot132.
