This is an extreme example of a baroque asymmetrical cartouche. The cartouche tradition has been traced back to ancient Egypt, and it could be described as a kind of nameplate, characterised by text such as a name or a title, surrounded by decoration. The decoration surrounding the cartouche shows a dramatic landscape of classical ruins. \r\n\r\nCartouches like these were particularly popular among mural and theatrical painters like Ottani, who used the Baroque style until almost to the end of the 18th century.","physicalDescription":"Plate 8.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Gaetano Ottani","id":"A14462"},"association":{"text":"Designer","id":"x36960"},"note":"after"},{"name":{"text":"Dionisio Valesi","id":"A14463"},"association":{"text":"Printmaker","id":"AAT25164"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Engraving","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Ornament prints","id":"THES49038"}],"styles":[{"text":"Baroque","id":"AAT21147"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006BA0614","2012FP2846"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"EO","shelf":"90","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Parma","id":"x34917"},"association":{"text":"Published","id":"x30682"},"note":"Probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1766","earliest":"1766-01-01","latest":"1766-12-31"},"association":{"text":"Published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"21.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Cut to","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"31.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Cut to","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Numbered 'VIII' in the upper left of the plate.","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""},{"content":"Lettered in the lower left of the plate: \r\n\r\n'Cajet: Ottani Bon: inv: et del:'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""},{"content":"Lettered in the lower right of the plate: \r\n\r\n'Dion: Valesi inc:'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"A complete set of the plates can be found in volume 92.B.10 in the V&A print room collection.
