At the end of their controversial trial and failed appeals, they were executed by electrocution on 19 June 1953. Ethel was the first woman to face capital punishment since the U.S. government hanged Mary Surratt for her role in President Abraham Lincoln's assasination in 1865. \r\nThis poster was issued to commemorate the 22nd anniversary of the Rosenberg execution.\r\nCuba, a communist island, produced many propaganda posters which decried various U.S. government actions. The slogan on this poster translates as \"we will be vindicated by history.\" It expresses Cuban solidarity with the Rosenbergs' plight and ultimately promotes a redemption of the couple denied to them in life. \r\nThe slogan also refers to a moving speech delivered by Fidel Castro during his own government defence trial in 1953 when he declared \"history will absolve me.\" Cubans viewing this poster in 1975 would have readily linked the quote to Fidel Castro, whether or not they were familiar with the Rosenbergs.","physicalDescription":"Stylised portrait in red and black of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg (the syle suggests graphic designer Felix Beltran).","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Beltran, Felix","id":"A13229"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":"possibly"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Departamento de Orientacion Revolucionaria del CC PCC","id":"A14459"},"association":{"text":"publishers","id":"AAT25574"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"colour offselt lithograph","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Propaganda","id":"THES48902"},{"text":"Politics","id":"THES48908"},{"text":"Posters","id":"THES252963"},{"text":"Caribbean","id":"THES286921"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2007BR3364"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC (VA)","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"3G","shelf":"DR13","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"poster","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Cuba","id":"x30039"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1975","earliest":"1975-01-01","latest":"1975-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Gift of the American Friends of the V&A; Gift to the American Friends by Leslie, Judith and Gabri Schreyer and Alice Schreyer Batko","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"84.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"54.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Seremos reivindicados por la historia","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"We will be vindicated by history [We will be vindicated for posterity]","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"translated from the Spanish"},{"content":"Conmemoracion del 22 aniversario/ del Asesinato de los/ Esposos Rosenberg por la reaccion/ Norteamericana","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"Commemoration of the 22nd anniversary of the assasination of the Rosenberg [couple] by North American reactionism.","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"lower left"},{"content":"Departamento de Orientacion Revolucionaria del CC PCC - 1975","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"Department of Revolutionary Orientation [official publishing arm of the Cuban Communist Party, 1974-1984 after which time it was renamed Editora Politica]","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"along lower right margin"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"\"Seremos reivindicados por la historia\" Stylised portraits of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg.
