The role was first danced by Vaslav Nijinsky. \n\nNijinsky's wife, Romola, described his costume as close-fitting fine elastic silk jersey which covered the entire body, except for part of his breast and arms, where bracelets of silk rose petals bound his biceps. It was overlaid with silk petals: ‘some were ragged as from a dying flower; others were stiff and firm...Nijinsky’s make-up was conceived to personify a rose. His face was like that of a celestial insect, his eyebrows suggesting some beautiful beetle, which one might expect to find closest to the heart of the rose, and his mouth was like rose-petals'.\n \r\nThe Ballets Russes premiered the ballet, choreographed by Mikhail Fokine, on 19 April 1911 at the Théâtre de Monte Carlo. The company first performed it in London on 24 June 1911 at the Royal Opera House. Tamara Karsavina appeared as the young girl who is given a rose at her first ball and then dreams of dancing with the rose's spirit. Audiences were astounded by the grace and agility of Nijinsky as he performed his famous 'leap' out of the window as the girl begins to wake. His popularity was such that his dresser used to sell petals from his costume to enthusiastic fans. Although Nijinsky's name appears in this costume, it was probably made for Stanislas Idzikowski.","physicalDescription":"Costume for the Spirit of the rose in Fokine's ballet Le Spectre de la rose for Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, designed 1911. \n\nS.838-1983\nSleeveless silk jersey leotard, apparently fastened by a button at the crotch and painted in tones of deep pink and violet with green tendrils, overlaid with silk petals in graduated tones from pink to purple. \n\nS.838A-1983\nFooted tights, the legs of cream silk jersey dyed and painted in tones of pink with green tendrils on thighs, the hidden upper part of cotton jersey.\n\nS.838B-1983\nFitted headdress covered with silk petals in tones from pale pink to mauve and light purple, with lengths of matching silk at the back.
