The Family Dog presents Charlatans and Canned Heat","type":"generic title"}],"summaryDescription":"The Charlatans were an influential band on the San Francisco psychedelic scene, formed in the mid-60s, despite their small recorded output (their first, eponymous, national release was not issued until 1969, well after their peak).  In opposition to the many ‘British Invasion’ bands that dominated American radio, the Charlatans, who had previously performed folk music, exchanged their acoustic instruments for electric ones and attempted to produce an authentic American sound.  Their music owed much to earlier jug bands and blues influences, while on-stage they projected a rebellious stance.  The band dressed in late 19th-century ‘Edwardian Cowboy’ costumes that would not have looked out of place during the San Fancisco gold rush, a style that subsequently became all the rage in Haight-Ashbury.  This poster reflects the Charlatans main psychological influences, placing them in a ‘Wild West’ poster.  There is also a visual pun referring to the other headlining bands of the evening, Sparrow and Canned Heat.  The poster was designed by Rick Griffin and George Hunter, with photography by Herb Greene.  Greene spent his evenings candidly photographing the people and happenings of the San Francisco rock scene.
