It was a dream sequence in six acts described as an 'allegorical fantasy' in which the woodcutter's children Tyltyl and Mytyl fall asleep after a disappointing Christmas and dream that the fairy Berylune sends them to find ' the bird that is blue'.\r\n\r\n\r\nThey set out In search of the bird, with a diamond which allows them to see the souls of others, and visit various places including the Land of Memory, Palace of Night, a forest and a Kingdom of the Future inhabited by fairies, animals, tree spirits and other creatures.
