This style of knitting required extremely thin needles and fine yarns to achieve the right effect. In order to make the thin strands of yarn visible on the steel needles, they were ‘blued’. In this process, the steel was immersed in salts, causing a chemical reaction which coloured the steel. As well as providing a contrasting shade to a light-coloured yarn, the bluing also prevented the needle from rusting.","physicalDescription":"Double-ended steel knitting needle, blued for lace knitting","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"steel","id":"AAT133751"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Blued steel","categories":[{"text":"Household objects","id":"THES48939"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2015HN1693","2015HL5954"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"010","id":"THES307208"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"010","id":"THES307208"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"010","id":"THES307208"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"010","id":"THES307208"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"010","id":"THES307208"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"knitting-needles","id":"x39629"}],[{"text":"Knitting needle","id":""}],[{"text":"Knitting needle","id":""}],[{"text":"Knitting needle","id":""}],[{"text":"Knitting needle","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1840-1860","earliest":"1840-01-01","latest":"1860-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Sarah Medlam","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Set of knitting needles for knitted lace, blued steel, British, 1840-1860","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["T.24:5-2005","T.24:4-2005","T.24:3-2005","T.24:2-2005","T.24:1-2005"],"accessionNumberNum":"24","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":2005,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Knitting needle [1]","Knitting needle [2]","Knitting needle [3]","Knitting needle [4]","Knitting needle [5]"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-05-21","recordCreationDate":"2005-04-20","availableToBook":true}}
